Block paving is the most versatile surface we lay, and the one we get asked for most. It suits almost any property, takes the weight of vehicles without complaint, and gives you far more control over the finished look than a poured or rolled surface can.

Why Choose Block Paving?
It lasts. A block paved drive laid on a correctly compacted sub-base will typically give you 20 years or more, and it handles heavy vehicles and turning traffic without rutting or cracking.
It can be repaired. Because the surface is made of individual units, a damaged or stained section can be lifted and replaced without touching the rest. If you ever need access to a pipe or cable underneath, the blocks come up and go back down.
You choose the look. Different block shapes, sizes, colours and laying patterns mean the surface can be matched to the house rather than imposed on it, with borders, contrasting edges and inset features where you want them.
It drains. Permeable blocks and jointing allow water through the surface rather than off it, which usually removes any planning issue on a front driveway and keeps water away from the house.
Herringbone
Blocks laid at 45 or 90 degrees, interlocking tightly. The strongest pattern available and the standard choice for driveways, because the interlock spreads vehicle loads across the surface rather than through single blocks.
Stretcher bond
A simple staggered pattern, like brickwork. Quick to lay, clean-looking, and well suited to paths and smaller areas.
Basketweave
Pairs of blocks alternating in direction. A traditional look that works well on patios and period properties, though it interlocks less than herringbone so it’s not the first choice under vehicles.
Circles and fans
A feature circle or fan pattern set into a larger area, usually as a centrepiece or turning point. We cut these in on site to fit the space.

Design and consultation. We visit, measure up and talk through the options: block type, colour, pattern, edging and drainage, and show you what will suit the property and the budget.
Quality materials. We work with established UK manufacturers rather than the cheapest available stock, and we’ll tell you what we’re using and why before you commit.
Proper installation. Excavation to the right depth, a compacted sub-base, correct falls for drainage, restrained edges, and blocks cut in cleanly at the boundaries. This is the part nobody sees and the part that decides how long the surface lasts.
Maintenance and repairs. We also clean, re-sand, reseal, re-level sunken areas and replace damaged blocks on existing paving, whether we laid it or not.
How long does a block paved driveway take?
Most domestic drives take four to six days, depending on the size and how much excavation is involved. You’ll get a start date and a realistic finish date with your quote.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not, provided the surface is permeable or water drains to a border or soakaway rather than the road. We’ll flag it if your job is an exception. Dropped kerbs are handled separately through the council.
Will weeds grow through it?
Not readily if it’s jointed properly. Weeds in block paving almost always seed from above into dirty joints rather than growing up from underneath, so keeping the surface clean and re-sanding every few years deals with it.
Do the blocks sink over time?
Not if the base is right. Sinking is a groundwork failure, not a paving failure — it means the sub-base wasn’t deep enough or wasn’t compacted properly. It’s the main reason we won’t cut corners on excavation.
Should I have it sealed?
It’s optional. Sealing makes the surface easier to clean and helps resist oil staining, and it can lift the colour. It needs redoing every few years, so it’s worth doing if you want the drive looking its best and don’t mind the upkeep.
