Boundaries, Brickwork & Fencing
Walls and fencing do two jobs at once — they secure and screen the garden, and they frame everything inside it. A good patio with a rotten fence behind it never quite looks finished.
We build garden walls, retaining walls and decorative brickwork, and install fencing of all types, across Romford, Hornchurch, Upminster and the surrounding areas. Because we do the groundwork too, we can take on the walls, steps, edging and paving as one job rather than leaving you to line up separate trades.
Garden and boundary walls
From a low ornamental wall around a border to full-height boundary and security walling, in red brick, stock brick, block or natural stone to match the property. Piers, capping, dwarf walls, raised planters, seating and steps all built to tie in with the paving rather than sit awkwardly against it. Every wall goes on proper concrete footings, with damp proofing and weep holes where they’re needed.
Retaining walls
Where a garden sits on a slope, or you’re creating a raised bed, terrace or split-level lawn, a retaining wall holds the ground back. These carry real load, so they need deep foundations, the right thickness and drainage behind them. Get any of that wrong and the wall bows or fails within a few years — it’s one of the most common failures we get called out to fix.
Fencing
Close board for maximum life, or overlap and featherboard panels where budget matters more. Picket and decorative fencing for front gardens, plus trellis and screening for extra height and privacy. We use concrete posts and gravel boards on most jobs, because timber rots at ground level first and it’s nearly always the post that fails rather than the panel.
How high can I build a wall or fence?
Generally up to 2 metres in a rear garden, and 1 metre where it fronts a road or footpath, without planning permission. Different rules apply to listed buildings and conservation areas. We’ll flag anything worth checking before we start.
Who owns the boundary fence?
Your deeds or title plan should show which boundaries you’re responsible for. It’s worth checking before work starts, and worth a conversation with the neighbour either way — most fence disputes start with someone not being told.
Close board or panels?
Close board if you want maximum life and a solid, uniform look, and don’t mind the higher cost. Panels if budget matters more, or you want something easily replaced section by section.
Do I need a retaining wall or will a normal wall do?
If there’s a difference in ground level either side, it’s retaining, and it needs to be built as one. A standard garden wall holding back soil will crack and lean — it’s one of the most common failures we get called out to fix.
Can you replace just a few panels or posts?
Yes. We’ll happily do repairs and partial replacements rather than pushing for a full run.
